National League Cup: Raiders 1 Chelmsford 5

Raiders were left to rue a poor first-period spell as they crashed to derby defeat in Lee Valley last night.

The home side, without Canadian defenceman Dwayne Newman and fellow blueliners Tyrone Miller and David Oliver, were left with a mountain to climb after Chieftains netted four times in seven and a half minutes in their opening match of the National League Cup.

Chelmsford player-coach Gary Clarke broke the deadlock at 11:50 and doubled his side’s lead in the 15th minute, before import Daniel Volrab made it 3-0 with an unassisted effort at 15:27.

Penalties late in the opening session against Tom Davis (cross-checking) and JJ McGrath, who earned a roughing minor along with Volrab, handed the visitors a powerplay chance and they made it count as James Ayling grabbed their fourth goal of the night.

Chieftains had dominated the shot count 18-8 in the first 20 minutes but it was more even in the middle frame and Raiders, who were also missing Shaun Yardley, made the onl addition to the scoreline to give themselves a faint glimmer of hope.

A delay of game minor against Dan Wright handed the hosts the man advantage and Davis struck on the powerplay in the 37th minute with assists to Marshall and Jakub Klima.

It proved a false dawn, though, as Chelmsford poured the pressure on Euan King in the closing period, outshooting Raiders by a 19-4 margin.

Raiders ran into penalty trouble again with McGrath serving a cross-checking minor and Billy Phillips sidelined after a slashing call, with Chelmsford’s Julian Smith called for roughing, when Matt Turner completed the scoring with another powerplay effort at 51:34.

The gloves came off in the closing stages, with Raiders stalwart Grant Taylor trading blows with John Connolly, to set up a spicy return at the Riverside tonight (Sunday, 6.30pm).

Scorers, Raiders: Davis 1 Marshall 0+1 Klima 0+1.

Chieftains: Clarke 2+1 Volrab 1+3 Turner 1 Ayling 1 Smith 0+2 Brears 0+1.

Shots on goal: King 51 Clements 27.

Penalty minutes: Raiders 30 Chelmsford 18.
