Quartet chasing title showdowns

Four Repton boxers will look to book their places in the England Youth finals when they appear at Portsmouth this weekend.

Billy Beer and Joe Kelleher recorded a double success at Harlow on Sunday, clinching semi-final places alongside walkover winners Sonny Edwards and Jimmy Smith.

Powerful right hands set Beer up for his Class B 56kg success against Farnham Warriors rival Eli Saunders, who came back well in the second round after taking big punches in the opening session.

The Repton boxer made sure of victory in the final round after decking his rival with another explosive right to take a split decision.

Improving Kelleher also carried too much power for Ventnor opponent Aaron McHugh in his Class B 69kg bout, with the referee calling a halt in the third round.

The game Isle of Wight youngster was outgunned as Kelleher ripped shots through his defences and the referee sensibly ended the one-sided action.

Edwards gets another bye in the semi-finals, while Smith meets Pinewood Star’s Mark Dean, Beer faces Yarsir Afzal (Oxford BA) and Kelleher takes on Liam O’Hare (Lydney).

Repton’s Frank Baker was in winning form on the Islington club tournament last week, outpointing home club rival Tommy Kerrigan.

But the tables were turned in another clash between the two clubs when Chris McCarthy outpointed Repton’s Taylor Ayling.

Joe Doran was another Repton winner when he outpointed Des Ward (Finchley) and Henry Turner took the verdict against Southend rival Albie Stokes.

n Frank Warren is planning a third big summer promotion at West Ham’s Upton Park ground, but it all depends on heavyweights Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury winning this weekend.

Warren staged Kevin Mitchell’s unsuccessful challenge against Aussie Michael Katsidis in 2010, before Chisora and David Haye packed in the fans two years later.

Chisora and Fury face foreign opposition at Stratford’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday, with Warren hoping they come through in style to set up a showdown at the home of the Hammers.

Trad TKO’s Frank Buglioni faces Italian Gaetano Nespro, while rival light-welterweights Billy Morgan and Michael Grant also clash on Saturday.

Grant insists he will halt unbeaten Morgan’s nine-fight victory run, saying: “I am really fit and confident I will win in four or five rounds.”

Also on the bill are Hughie Fury, Bradley Skeete, Steve Collins Junior and George Kean.
