Repton on cloud nine

Repton boxers were on cloud nine after winning all of their bouts at the England Junior/Cadet pre quarter finals at Earslfield on Sunday.

The London title winners from the previous Sunday were back in action against Eastern Counties opposition and seven ring wins, plus two walkovers, made it another perfect day for the Bethnal Green brigade.

Henry Turner produced a sparkling display against Holland Park’s Brandon Caton in their Cadet 50kg clash and took the unanimous verdict.

And Isaac Johnson turned back the challenge of another Billericay’s Richard Caton, landing solid shots to force a second-round stoppage.

Tommy Roberts proved too good for Southend rival Albie Stokes in the junior section, as he took their 50kg clash on a unanimous verdict.

And the same clubs clashed at 54kg, where John Hanrahan outpointed Harry Hemmings.

Mohammed Khan came through his 57kg contest with Chalvedon’s Terry Lee, landing the scoring shots for a good points victory.

And European gold medallist John Johnson swept aside the challenge of gallant national schools finalist Joe Manning (Heros), who survived the pressure but lost on points.

Jesse Dean Harris dominated his clash with Chatteris rival Dean Baxter, but was only given a majority verdict.

And the seven winners will be joined by John Lee and Jamal Khan in the quarter-finals at Camberley Surrey on Saturday, after their were handed byes.

The semi-finals are in Sheffield on March 21, with the finals the following day.

A nine-man Repton senior team will renew old rivalries with the Belfast Dockers when they fly out for a tournament in Ulster tomorrow (Friday).

n Ben Day was overjoyed at winning his first pro title at the age of 36, after scoring a first-round win at York Hall on Saturday.

And after flattening Latvia Ilja Sovdra to claim the International Masters bronze belt, he was quick to thank Poplar gym boss Alec Wilkey, saying: “I can’t thank this man enough.”

It took just a minute for Day to power the body shot that left his rival writhing on the canvas to take his record to eight fights unbeaten.

The Upton brothers proved too good for three eastern European journeymen on the same Goodwin promotion.

Sonny erased the memory of a first-round defeat at York Hall when stopping his rival Croatian Ivan Duvancic in four rounds.

And Paul Upton’s seventh straight win also came in the fourth when referee Kieran McCann issued regular warnings then disqualified Croatian Zoran Cvec who was well behind on points.

Anthony Upton made it eight straight wins with a one-sided points success over Slovakian Lubos Priehradnik, landing well-placed punches.

The three boxing brothers are due to return to York Hall in May.

*East London cruiserweight Jose Lopes looks to make it three wins in the paid ranks when he appears on another Goodwin promotion at York Hall this Saturday.

Two previous successes have come at the same venue and he looks to send 24-year-old Croatian Maco Rupcic back to Zagreb with another defeat on his record.

Nathan Weisse faces Johnny Garton in one of four 10-rounders, alongside Lee Markham, Larry Ekundayo and Leon McKenzie.

Former Repton amateur Prince Patel makes his pro debut on a bill that includes Joe Mullender, Matt McCarthy, Ashley Sexton, Ajiu Shari and Louie Darling.

*Johnny Coyle, based at Alec Wilkey’s Poplar gym, heads the bill at Grays on Saturday against Wiltshire fighter Liam Richards on a show that also features Canning Town welterweight Frank Greaves.
