21-year-old aims to add his name to great Repton gold winners of the past

Flyweight Charlie Edwards is looking to add another Commonwealth Games medal to the impressive trophy list at Repton Boxing Club when he bids for Glasgow glory this week.

The 21-year-old aims to add his name to great Repton gold winners of the past – Audley Harrison and Courtney Fry in 1998 and Darren Barker in 2002.

The Bethnal Green club’s medal trail is impressive and Edwards has set his sights on an award to follow his ABA title triumphs and European bronze he won in 2011.

Success means he may well have to turn the tables on outstanding Welsh rival Andrew Selby, who created history by retaining his European Gold in the 2013 event.

Selby’s success last year included a win over Edwards, but the Repton boxer, whose younger brother Sunny is also a title winner at the Bethnal Green club, is confident he has the ability to upset the Welsh star.

“We have sparred many times, I know his style very well,” said the Repton boxer who defeated another old rival Yorskhire fighter Jack Bateson to clinch his 2014 England Elite title.

That success completed an outstanding Repton double after clubmate Harvey Horn lifted the light-flyweight award.

However, while Horn was overlooked by England selectors, Edwards was called up for the Commonwealth Games squad.

He moved into the Glasgow games village this week after a final training camp and admitted: “I feel great and can’t wait to get started.”

? There was disappointment for another Repton boxer on international duty, when welterweight Sam McNess lost in the China Open International tournament.

The GB team member was beaten by Ahmin Ghasemipour of Iran on a points decision in their 69kg clash at the tournament in Guiyang last week.
