Repton featherweight Chris Ali gets the chance to avenge a defeat for his former club-mate Lucien Reid when a quartet of east London club hopes enter the ABA semi- finals at the TA Centre, Grove Park, Lewisham on Saturday (1.30pm start), writes Len Whaley.

Ali, who has shown sparkling form on the ABA title-trail, is looking for the win that will put him in the final when he faces experienced South Oxhey campaigner Reece Bellotti – the current ABA bantamweight champion.

Bellotti eliminated Reid, now boxing for West Ham BC, on his way to claiming the 2012 National title, but now the South Oxhey boxer has moved up to the featherweight division.

Meanwhile, Reid has stayed at bantamweight and has once again come through the ABA qualifying stages and appears in Saturday’s semi-finals.

He will be tested by Portsmouth rival Josh Pritchard from the Moneyfields club in the battle for a place in the 54kg final.

The two other east London boxers bidding for ABA final places – Repton welterweight Sam McNess and West Ham light-middleweight Luke Saunders – are both facing rivals from Southampton’s Golden Ring BC.

Adam Grigg is out to halt the progress of the talented McNess, who won the London title after a hectic schedule, but then enjoyed a walkover win in the quarter-finals.

NABC title winner Brad Pauls is the rival for Saunders, already a multi-national champion at junior level, who has shown superb form on the senior title trail, including a win over reigning ABA champion Kelvin Fawaz (All Stars) in the London final.

Winners from the semi-finals on Saturday go forward to meet the northern area winners at Durham’s Rainton Meadows Arena two weeks later.
