A hat-trick of tries from captain Dan Bracken helped East London to a 33-19 win over London Three Essex rivals Campion at West Ham’s Memorial Ground.

Campion looked to use a strong wind to their advantage in the first half, but on a heavy pitch it was the hosts who almost broke the deadlock on seven minutes but the ball was ruled to have been held up over the line.

It was only a temporary reprieve as East London scored two minutes later when Bracken scored in the left corner after sustained pressure from the forwards. Full-back Sean Cooper missed the conversion.

The home side had second row Rob Yiannakou yellow carded on 20 minutes but it didn’t halt their momentum as Cooper intercepted a Campion pass close to his own line on 23 minutes and set off.

A pass to outside centre Alexis Merle looked as if the second try was coming until the referee called them back for crossing.

Campion took advantage of their extra man to score tries on 25 and 29 minutes, one of which was converted.

With the yellow card period over, a knock-on when clean through denied the home side and when the ball did go over the try line twice more it was adjudged to have been held up.

Bracken scored his second try under the posts a minute before half-time, though, after a scrum drive and Cooper converted to level the scores.

East London took the lead on 45 minutes whena a neat pass from fly-half Daryl O’Brien fed flanker Eddie Brown whose diagonal run from the 22 took him under the posts for Cooper to convert.

Bracken scored his hat-trick on 52 minutes – Cooper converting – before Campion scored their own converted try on 57 minutes.

The final score came on 69 minutes as scrum-half Will Brown broke on the left and passed to winger Kevin O’Donoghue who held off two tackles to scamper under the posts. Cooper converted.

Skipper Bracken said: “It was nice to score three tries but this was a better all-round team performance than of late.”

The win keeps East London in fourth place ahead of their trip to leaders Basildon this weekend.
