Pat Reed feels Old Cooperians’ trip to East London in London Three Essex on Saturday could go a long way to defining their season.

Ahead of Saturday’s match, the St Mary’s Lane club currently sit sixth in the table with four wins from their first seven games.

East London, meanwhile, are six points better off in third place with five wins so far this term.

Coops could close that gap to as little as a point with a win this weekend and head coach Reed knows any success could have long-term benefits for his team.

“Saturday is a massive game for us if we are serious about wanting to finish in the top four this season,” he said.

“We know if we want to be in the top four, we have to win and the result will determine where we can go this season.

“With the top two, I don’t see them losing too many more games so the pressure is on the rest of us to stay with them as much as we can.

“Whenever you come up against a team near you in the table, you want to beat them so Saturday is an important game for us.”

Coops are sure to take to the pitch at East London on Saturday full of confidence after a 66-13 mauling of Millwall last weekend.

Harry Fayers scored a hat-trick of tries for the St Mary’s Lane club in the rout, despite being a late call-up to the starting XV on his return from injury.

Joe Bilton and Tom Scott both nabbed braces in the emphatic win, while Jason Ox and Charlie Goodchild also crossed the whitewash as Coops ran in 10 tries in all.

It was a second league win in a row for St Mary’s Lane club, but Reed was keen to put it into context with Millwall still yet to win in the league this term.

“The boys were happy to have the chance to throw the ball around and score plenty of tries, but we know we’ll face tougher challenges this season,” he added.

“The win over Millwall was a big confidence booster at least and we were happy to get the win given our struggles with availability.

“Jason Ox played well and so did Ed Stannard before he went off injured. Ray Flowers was another to do well in a strong team performance.”

Reed will hope another strong team performance this weekend proves enough for Coops as they hope to triumph at East London.
