East London saved their best away performance to the last with an 87-19 victory at Maldon in London Three Essex.

The visitors ran in 13 tries, with a hat-trick from scrum-half Will Brown, against a side who had only been beaten once at home during the 2017/18 campaign.

They were into their stride within two minutes as sustained pressure from kick-off saw Brown score on the burst and fly-half Alan Ferguson converted.

Maldon came back with two converted tries but Ferguson turned down a kickable penalty to go for a quick tap and go and good hands from second row Rob Yiannakou and Brown set up lock Matthew Schofield for a try, converted by Ferguson.

East London regained the lead on 16 minutes after a scrum won against the head saw the ball worked out wide for left wing Kevin O’Donoghue to score.

The marauding East London pack were now dominant as Yiannakou, Schofield, front row Ben Hogan and flanker Nick Parrott all combined in a flowing move on 20 minutes that Brown finished and Ferguson converted.

Maldon added an unconverted try on 23 minutes but another scrum won against the head saw number eight Dan Bracken pick up and force his way over.

Skipper Bracken added another as half-time approached after a scrum in the corner was won against the head and Ferguson converted both for a 40-19 lead.

East London never let up as Brown set up Parrott’s try on 51 minutes and Ferguson converted.

Corey Griffiths, who replaced injured centre Joe Kelly at the break, sidestepped two defenders to score and a sublime pass from behind his back while in full stride set up Brown’s third.

Ferguson added two more conversions as the gap grew and was on target after replacement prop Adrian Samuel scored the first of his two tries, receiving a pass from a quick penalty on the five-metre line and bursting over.

Right wing Cooper was next too go over and Griffiths added his second when outpacing the home defence on a diagonal run from just inside halfway.

Ferguson took his conversion tally to 11, before Samuel added his second try and Bracken said: “We’ve been threatening this kind of performance all season and we are now second for total number of points scored.”
