Teenager has been named on bench for Cyprus in Rugby Europe International Championships game against Serbia

East London forward Rob Yiannakou is in line to make his debut for Cyprus in the Rugby Europe International Championships on Saturday.

The teenager, who plays at lock, has received his first call-up to the senior squad for their game against Serbia in Belgrade.

Yiannakou will start on the bench for Cyprus in the game, but is excited by the prospect of making his debut.

“I’m really looking forward to the game. I know I’m starting from the bench, but they have promised me at least 20 minutes,” said Yiannakou, who qualifies for Cyprus through his grandfather.

“It may be more because I’ve been told I’ll be covering all the second row and back row positions.

“There will be about ten members of the family, including my dad Tony who also played for East London, who will be watching at home in Chigwell.

“All the players from East London will also be watching at the clubhouse.

“I’ve never been abroad to play before, so I had to find if they’d let me take my boots on the plane as hand luggage or through checked-in baggage!

“I’ll also have to remember to pack my gum shield, which I’m bound to forget.

“I can’t wait to get out there. I’ve been practising the national anthem and can’t wait to pull on the shirt. I hope I do everyone proud.”
