Repton's own Magnificent Seven look forward to the National Schoolboys boxing Championship finals at Brentwood in 10 days after coming through the semi-finals in style in Haslemere, Surrey on Sunday

Repton's own 'Magnificent Seven' look forward to the National Schoolboys boxing Championship finals at Brentwood in 10 days after coming through the semi-finals in style in Haslemere, Surrey on Sunday.

Frank Baker, Jimmy Smith, Obie Coates, Danny Arnold Simon Baker and James Branch plus walkover winner John Baker made it success all the way for the Bethnal Green brigade.

They all came through as London and Eastern Regional champions to conquer the winners of the South, West and Home Counities winners in their clashes on Sunday.

Baker and Smith were the Class One winners for Repton when they came through in very contrasting styles.

In the 40kg clash Teaken Prior (Wells, Somerset) put up plucky resistance against the Repton boxer, but Baker was a winner all the way scoring a 13-0 victory on the scorecards.

The 44kg fight between Patrick McDonagh from Swindown's Walcot BC and Smith was a much closer affair.

Smith showed his class to land the more effective shots and his speedy punches brouight him the decision by a 5-4 margin.

In the Class Two 38kg semi-final duel Brendon Fagan (Cheshunt) and Obie Coates staged a classic battle of the counter punchers.

However it was Coates who landed the early shots forcing his rival to become more aggressive and leave the openings for the Repton hope to clinch a 4-2 victory margin.

Repton's Class Three trio boxers Arnold and Simion Baker also stormed through to one sided victory in their semi final duels.

At under-48kg Marley Samways (Moneyfields) was on the receiving end of some accurate attacks from the opening bell as impressive Arnold called the shots .

The Repton boxer took the first session and never looked a loser as he stretched his advantage with a 17-1 scoring from the judges to send him into the national final.

In similar style Kent's brave under 60kg hope Tom Matthews (Faversham) never looked like halting Simon Baker's march into the national final.

The Repton boxed pierced his rival's defences in every round with well-placed punches to win convincingly enough for a runaway points margin of 10-1 in his favour at the final bell

In contrast Nathan Halton (Apollo) made the early running against Branch (Repton) in their under-70kg meeting firing two handed attacks that threatened to end the east London club's successful march at the semi finals.

However, to his credit, Branch, looking to follow the success of his father James who earned multi-title trophies in the Bethnal Green club colours, showed his courage as he slammed back in style.

It was the Appollo boxer who was on the recieving of effective jabs and fiollow up hooks as Branch turned on the pressure to leave no doubt about his right to a final place - the judges scored it convincingly 21-6 in his favour at the finish.

Next stop for the Repton hopes are the National finals held over two days on the first weekend in March at Brentwood with some tough tests ahead against the winners of the north east semi finals.

Repton boxers are booked for a team match at the Woolstone Country Club, Chigwell on Friday night which heads the local club's latest dinner show tournament.

The Repton boxers will be tested by a strong Welsh squad who come to town with a mixed squad for the team match - there are five senior contests and three junior clashes on the scheduled programme with supporting club contests on the night.
