Oliver: Solent fixture is a must-win for us
London Raiders face a crucial match in the National League as they look to end a long winless run this weekend.
Solent are the visitors to Lee Valley tomorrow (Saturday, 5.30pm) and face a Raiders side who have now gone 11 matches without success after losing to Invicta and Chelmsford last weekend.
Three previous meetings between the sides this season have been close, with Solent holding Raiders to a 1-1 draw in east London in October.
Raiders won 3-1 on the coast in November and had to come from behind for a 2-2 draw on their return to the small rink last month.
And defenceman David Oliver is under no illusions about the importance of this weekend’s clash, saying: “It’s a must-win game on Saturday. It’s a six-pointer, no questions asked.”
Seventh-placed Raiders have lost nine of their last 11 matches in all competitions, but six of those defeats have come at the hands of top two Chelmsford and Invicta.
And as they look at the battles to come over the closing weeks of the regular campaign, there are certainly more winnable fixtures.
But Oliver says they must not be complacent, adding: “Looking at our fixture list we still have to play a lot of the teams around us, which is where we need to be showing what we can do and try and move up the table and get in a better place before the play-offs.
“We’re the only ones who can turn this around and as a team we are going to.”
