It’s sweet 16 for Repton — that’s the number of schoolboys from the Bethnal Green club who lifted titles at the London Schools’ Finals at Feltham on Saturday.

It’s an all-time record for the east London outfit as they move forward to the national rounds of the annual tournament with the pre-quarter-final matches taking place back at Feltham this coming Saturday.

Repton new boys sparkled in the youngest section of the competition — Class One — where Rakhim Tatou, Adam Hussain, Jesse Beck, Jamil Khan and Henry Turner boxed their way to titles.

Hussain proved one of the quickest winners of the night, scoring a first-round success over Matt Darkins (Samuel Montague) to claim the 32kg crown.

Tatou continued his progress along the title trail by taking the 34kg award, as his classy display earned a points verdict over Stowe’s Steve Corcoran.

Jesse Beck featured in a high standard 38kg clash against Islington’s counter-punching Christy McCarthy, but the Repton youngster produced the more effective attacks to make sure of his points success.

Jamil Khan was another put to the test when he faced Adam Azim (Dale Youth) in a closely fought 40kg final — but produced a last-round rally to make sure of the verdict.

Henry Turner showed his commanding form in his clash with south London rival Terry Deveney (Dale Youth), and was good value for another points verdict.

Taking the Class Two honours with good wins for the Bethnal Green brigade were Michael Oats, John Doran and Johnny Hanrahan.

Oats, looking for his second national award in succession, maintained the pressure on Brendan Dunn (Dale Youth) in their 34kg final as the Repton entry claimed another London title.

South Londoner Dominic Joyce, from the Fisher BC, tried to upset Doran’s hopes in the 36kg final, but the Repton boxer came through in style to take the points verdict.

Hanrahan showed his class against Steve Barton (Northolt BC), dominating the exchanges from the start to make sure of the decision and the 40kg London title.

In the Class Three division there were London titles for Repton hopes Levi Lee, Levi Coates and Paddy Ward.

Lee’s clash with John O’Donnell (Hooks BC) proved an entertaining affair, but the Repton boxer showed the form which has already earned him national honours as he took the 38kg London title.

Coates, another former national champion for Repton, made sure of the 40kg title by dominating the exchanges against Jimmy Pettit (Nemesis) and came through a good points winner.

Ward continued his progress in the 52kg section against Stowe BC entry Des Corcoran — giving a bright display to move through to the next stage of the competition.

Saturday’s winners are joined by John Lee, Brian Gentle, Jesse Dean Harris, Tyrane Wynter and Tommy Ball, who were all given walkovers, as they move into the pre-quarter-finals against the Western Counties champions.

But Repton trio Tommy Ward, Frankie Edwards and Joe Moore were all eliminated at the London finals.
