National League: Isle of Wight 7 Lee Valley 2

Lee Valley Lions saw their three-game winning streak ended by the Isle of Wight Tigers last night.

The east Londoners travelled to Ryde in good spirits, following wins over Chelmsford, Peterborough and Invicta.

But they fell behind in the ninth minute when Joseph Denness put the hosts ahead on a 5-on-3 powerplay, as Nick Alley and Ashlee Cave served cross-checking minors.

Joseph Berry levelled at 11:26, with an assist from Gennadi Yufit, but Wight regained the lead before the first break as Denness netted his second.

Sean Richardson claimed the only goal of the middle period to put Tigers 3-1 up, but Lions had roared back from three goals down to beat Invicta a week earlier.

There was to be no such escape this time, though, as Graham MacFarlane netted Wight’s fourth goal of the game early in the final period.

And when Andrew Robinson made it 5-1 with a shorthanded goal, Lions were left with a mountain to climb.

A boarding call against Alley gave Wight the chance to add a sixth on the powerplay, through Richardson, and Aaron Edwards made it 7-1 with just over seven minutes remaining.

Berry grabbed his second for Lee Valley late on, but it was little consolation as they made the long trip home empty-handed.

Lions will look to bounce back when they play host to London rivals Haringey in a capital derby on Saturday (January 25, 5.15pm).
