Football competition reaches decisive stage

Hundreds of footballers from across London have been battling it out for a place in the finals of the third annual Mayor’s Cup this week.

The Tower Hamlets based competition at Mile End Stadium saw more than 35 youth and senior teams vie for a place in the finals, which take place on Sunday.

Both the under-14 and under-16 finals will see Vallance FC take on Somers Town Future.

The under-18 final will see Bethnal Green Utd go up against Bromley, while the senior decider will feature Bromley and London Tigers.

The women’s final will pit Tower Hamlets against Kikk Talang and Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman said: “It is extremely positive to see hundreds of young people get active and take part in the heat stages of this prestigious sporting event.

“There has been a huge amount of talent showcased already.”

Cllr Oliur Rahman, cabinet member for Children’s Services, added: “I have been very impressed with the level of skill on show and look forward to an exciting finals day. Come along and support your team!”

Mesba Ahmed, chief executive of London Tigers said: “The tournament was played in good spirit and it was great to see that Tower Hamlets Council with the support of the Mayor organise such a great event.”

The junior phase of the competition will start tomorrow (Saturday) where 25 teams will participate across four age groups and include 300 youngsters.

The first match on Sunday’s finals day will kick off at 10am.
