Repton youngster Simon Baker celebrated a gold medal success at the Tri-Nations tournament in Swansea

Repton youngster Simon Baker celebrated a gold medal success following two good wins at the Tri-Nations tournament in Swansea last weekend.

Baker launched his bid for glory against Wales fighter Adam Edmondson and took control of the contest from the opening bell, recording a shutout victory following a 13-0 final points tally.

He moved forward to a final showdown against old rival Kaseem Mahood, the Birmingham boxer who was England's No2 at the tournament.

Baker looked set for another comfortable win when he moved into a commanding 10-5 lead, but he was handicapped by a recurring nosebleed in the final round.

Yet the Repton boxer managed to stay ahead of rival Mahood to clinch the verdict and the gold medal.

l Scott McNess took another step towards national title success when the Repton star defeated Miley Cash, from St Albans, in the Junior ABA last-16 contests at Hayes on Sunday.

Class Five Under-63kg entry McNess controlled the action to record a repeat triumph over the Home Counties champion following a unanimous points verdict.

But it was the end of the title trail for club-mate Jimmy Smith, who hardly stopped throwing punches and looked unfortunate to finish on the wrong end of a majority points-verdict against Under-75kg Class Four rival Jacob Peterson, from Cheshunt.

McNess and Repton's walkover winners now move forward to the national quarter-final contests at Seawick Holiday Camp in Clacton on May 10.

l Repton's Reggie Thrower turned on the style to chalk up a win for London in their team match against the Home Counties at the Prince Regent Hotel, Woodford last week.

Thrower proved too good for Slough's talented Lee Murphy as he took control of the bout with effective attacks and made sure of the points verdict.

There were also good wins for Repton boxers in the night's supporting bouts, with new boy Jordan Tomkins outpointing Northolt's Chris Docherty and Harry Dighton also in winning form against Docherty's club-mate Dave Barrett.

Pat McDonagh and Billy Smith were also in winning form as the Repton duo overcame Northolt rivals Al Culhane and Ray Mirh.

Repton's Connor Packman also recorded an good victory over Danson Youth opponent Jimmy Shannon.
