Squad aim to build on opening day success

The University of East London’s cricket team will look to build on a winning start to the outdoor season when they play their second fixture tomorrow.

UEL dismissed Essex seconds for just 50 in 24 overs in their opening match last week, after David Booth, Usman Sahar and Haroon Qadoos impressed with the ball.

And captain Ali Wood supported Mark Barrell (36 not out) with the bat as UEL chased their target without loss in just 4.3 overs.

Wood said: “I asked the boys at the start of the game to make a big statement for the season ahead. It is a short season with only five fixtures so it is very important to get off to a good start and we did that.

“I couldn’t ask for any more from them after a performance like that so I’m delighted.”

UEL welcome Greenwich University to Wanstead’s Nutter Lane ground this week and Wood is expecting a harder time of things for his side.

He added: “They are coming off a good victory against St Marys so we expect a much tougher game than the one against Essex.

“We are looking to build from our performance last week and continue to push for promotion. The boys have trained well this week and we are confident of another positive result this Wednesday.”
