Basketball squad too strong for rivals

UEL’s basketball squad continued the new BUCS campaign where they left off last term with an emphatic 98-33 win over the London School of Economics in South East Division 1A.

LSE had been relegated from the Premier Division last season and the opening stages were closely-fought, with UEL moving 7-6 up after three minutes.

A series of three-pointers from Douglas Bennett and Byron Richards stretched the lead to 21-8 and UEL never looked back.

Seven players had made it onto the scoresheet by the end of the first quarter, as UEL led 27-14, and Will Ashby added 11 of his team high 21 points in the second quarter, including a pair of three-pointers.

UEL had moved 45-25 up by half-time and tight defensive work kept LSE off the board in the third period as yan Sager and Trent Reeves impresssed in particular.

Point guards Lukas Volskis, Blayne Freckleton and Matic Zupanc helped extend the lead to 69-25, but EL had to wait five minutes to add to their tally in the fourth quarter.

Lamar Roberts added six points and veteran Damian Lyons chipped in with four more as all but one of the 12-strong team made the scoresheet in a fine team performance.

New head coach JP Campbell said: “I’m pleased as a whole with the performance. We have an extremely talented group of players here and have high hopes for the season.

“There is still much to work on and tougher games in store, but most certainly it was a very pleasing start.”

UEL play their first home game on Wedneday (October 23) against London Met, with a 2pm tip-off.

The women’s team play against Middlesex at 4pm.
