BUCS Netball South Eastern 6B: University of East London 51 Imperial College London 38
A storming final quarter from University of East London’s netball first team saw them beat their Imperial College London rivals 51-38 at the SportsDock.
In a highly competitive opening, goal shooter Jules Lawly used her height advantage wisely to fire the hosts into an 8-7 lead.
The tempo remained high, but UEL’s defence began to cope magnificently towards the end of the first period to ensure the home side held a 14-8 advantage by the end.
But at the start of the second period, UEL were under increasing pressure with Imperial determined to haul themselves back into the game with a quick run of scoring.
With four points in the first five minutes for the visitors, UEL saw their lead cut to just three with the score 15-12 before awaking.
Shannon Cummins’ tireless work ethic and link up play with Danielle Carruthers and Stacy Smith helped to set up Lawly on a regular basis, who proved as clinical as ever to establish a 20-14 lead.
Imperial, though, came back once more to make it a four-point game heading into half time with the score 25-21 in favour of UEL.
At the start of the third quarter, the hosts made a few tactical tweaks with Lawly dropping back to goal keeper, making the most of her height in defence.
It seemingly worked, with the hosts preventing Imperial from getting to close, while the attack worked well to stretch the lead to 36-27 heading into the final quarter.
From there, it was all one-way traffic with Lawly returning to attack alongside Smith as UEL ran riot as their superior fitness told to wrap up a solid win.
