Basketball squad ease to victory

University of East London men’s basketball squad booked their place in the semi-finals of the BUCS Trophy with a comfortable win over Cambridge University.

Unbeaten on their home court, UEL ran out 87-61 winners to ease into the last four.

They built a 25-16 lead in the opening quarter, as Ryan Sager, Matic Zupanc and Jamie Hayes shared scoring duties.

And although Cambridge tried to fight back, UEL had moved 41-25 ahead by half time as Hayes landed two points from the free throw line just before the buzzer.

The visitors scored the first three points of the third quarter, but UEL bounced back quickly as Dougie Bennett made it 43-28.

UEL continued to score well and their fast-break game was proving difficult for Cambridge to deal with as they only scored 12 points in the quarter.

Lukas Volskis completed the scoring late on, topping the charts with 18 points, as Blayne Freckleton added 17 and Sager contributed 14.

Their efforts helped UEL finish well clear of their rivals and they will now look forward to a meeting with Northampton.
