Student athletes and alumni from the University of East London won five medals at the Muller British Championships in Birmingham at the weekend.

Team GB sprinter Bianca Williams won silver in the women’s 200m in 22.60 seconds, her fastest time for four years, and bronze in the 100m.

And current UEL student Shannon Hylton was also in fine form in the 200m, with a lifetime best of 22.78 for fourth, just two thousands of a second outside the bronze medal.

In the men’s shot put, alumnus Youcef Zatat took silver with a throw of 18.01 metres, just 0.34 centimetres behind the winner.

And back on the track, current student Kai Riley La Borde brought home a bronze in the men’s 110 metres hurdles in a time of 13.96.

That success that was followed by alumnus Adam Gemili capping the medal haul with silver in the men’s 200m in 20.26.

Several other UEL students and alumni competed at the weekend, showing the strength in depth in UEL’s athletics programme.

Students Corinne Humphreys, Leroy Cain, Eden Davis, Emmanuel Sosanya, Eavion Richardson and Lennox Thompson and former student Kimberly Baptiste all competed for spots in the European Championships later this year in Glasgow.

Matthew Tansley, UEL’s Director of Sport, said: “It’s great to see so many former and current UEL students doing so well. They are a credit to themselves and the University.

“We’re extremely proud to be able to play a role in their journey on and off the competitive stage. We’re building our reputation for supporting talent and this is a sign of more success to come in the future.”
