UEL women claim volleyball championship

University of East London women’s volleyball team become the University’s first-ever side to win a national championship recently when they clinched the BUCS Trophy Final.

UEL’s stars beat the University College London in March to book their spot in the final taking place ay Loughborough.

And they eased past opponents University of Liverpool in three straight sets to cap a historic campaign.

Although the first set was tight, they romped past Liverpool in the second to give themselves a massive chance of winning the championship.

Despite some tough moments in the third they eventually sealed it by five points to win 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 in three sets.

Captain Alex Vadjova hailed UEL afterwards, who were undefeated in their BUCS League season too winning 10 consecutive matches.

“I’m proud of the girls, they really came together,” said Vadjova.

“Winning our league and the trophy just proves that we deserve to be in the top league and play against the best.”

The UEL champions will now enter the play-offs to gain promotion to the Premier South League. The first match will be away against University of East Anglia on April 22.

UEL’s director of sport David Cosford said the historic triumph means so much to the University.

“It gives me great pride and pleasure to see the women’s volleyball team achieve our first ever BUCS trophy,” he said.

“Our women’s team has been very strong all year, and this has capped off a tremendous season.

“Next year the team will hopefully compete in BUCS premier league and enable us to compete against and beat the best universities in the UK.”
