Netball squads begin new season well

UEL’s netball squads enjoyed a comfortable win double as the new BUCS season got underway.

The recently promoted first team dominated their Division 7B clash with Goldsmiths to run out convincing 58-12 winners after the second string had beaten Greenwich thirds 30-13 in their away fixture.

Goal shooter Eleana Clark and goal attack Stacie Smith helped the firsts build a 12-goal lead in the first quarter of their match, as Karen Miles and Dani Dee produced some resolute defensive work to restrict Goldsmiths to a single goal in the second period.

UEL led 28-4 at half-time and good work from Shauna Williams, Caroline Stabler, Chanel Springer and Dani Carruthers helped them extend their advantage throughout the rest of the match.

Dee took the player of the match award for her strong contribution to defence, specifically her interceptions and consistency.

The second team overcame a slow start, which saw them fall behind, to move 8-3 up at the first break.

Goal shooter Nina Brown and goal attack Lara Richens worked hard to capitalise on numerous chances, while goal keeper Hannah Backlock and goal defence Jenna Johnstone produced vital interceptions to keep Greenwich at arm’s length.

UEL remained in front through the third quarter, with wing attack Kacee Simons and Romanie Bailey combining well with wing defence Meghan Rigby and centre Shannon Cummings.

And they restricted their rivals to just three goals in the final quarter to claim a comfortable victory.

Both UEL teams play at home next week, as the firsts host Kings College and the seconds entertain UCS.
