Globe Primary School pupil stars for country at Home International Table Tennis Championships

Jamie Dignum made his England under-11 table tennis debut recently in the Home International Championships where he competed against Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

The Globe Primary School pupil, who also atends the Morpeth School table tennis programme, made the long trip to the Wales National Sports Centre in Cardiff and in his first match, England beat Jersey 9-1.

Dignum won both his single matches and a double and remained undefeated as England went on to beat hosts Wales, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Dignum then helped his country beat Ireland 10-0 to set up a final tie against Scotland.

England eventually won 7-3 to take the gold medal and Dignum finished the team competition having not lost a single game.

In the individual contest, Dignum sailed through to the quarter-finals where he lost 3-0 to the number one seed, Chris Wheeler, from Scotland, who went on to win the competition.

Dignum’s coach, Grant Solder was full of praise for the 11-year-old, who will be attending Morpeth School from September.

“This is a great achievement for Jamie to win a gold medal on his England debut,” said Solder.

“Jamie has gained great experience from competing in this international event and for him to be undefeated in the team event personally is a great
achievement.”
