Royal Holloway, University of London’s first team prove too strong and triumph 92-49 at SportsDock

University of East London’s third team put up a brave fight in the BUCS Basketball South Eastern Conference Cup, but suffered a heavy defeat.

Although they impressing in various quarters, Royal Holloway, University of London’s first team triumphed 92-49.

After UEL took an early lead in the first quarter, they were mostly on the back foot of a closely-contested opening 10 minutes. They trailed 25-19 by the end of the opening period.

Holloway increased their lead early in the second quarter, making it 36-21 early on. Despite continued battling by UEL, their London rivals continued to pull away from the home side, and their dominance was reflected by the scoreboard at the end of the quarter at 55-28.

The third quarter resulted in Holloway attacking more than they had done all match, which inevitably led to them scoring more points and gaining an even larger lead over UEL.

The quarter ended 79-34 to the visitors, and they looked to be in full control of the match and confident.

Despite Holloway’s astounding lead, UEL didn’t let their spirits drop. They continued to fight in the final quarter and didn’t allow the away side have it easy.

However, this wasn’t enough to keep them in the cup and the game ended 92-49 to an impressive Royal Holloway.

UEL will be disappointed to be out of the cup, but they can be proud of their performance against a strong opponent, who managed to put themselves out of the east Londoners reach in the middle two quarters.

The hosts can now turn their attention to their match against Hertfordshire next Wednesday, in order to continue their impressive league form.
