A new art exhibition opens in London’s East End today which challenges conventionally-held views on mental health.

The Perception exhibition being staged at Poplar’s Chrisp Street Market until Saturday shows the work of eight artists who live with mental illness and challenges society’s traditional views.

Grey Matters mental health blog founder Ifeyinwa Frederick and Remz Curation founder Hannah Remi Oghene were both “frustrated by misconceptions surrounding mental illness”.

So they decided to remove the “stigma” by creating a public exhibition, pointing out that two popular messages people with mental problems want portrayed, according to ‘Time to Change’ campaign, were that they were real people—“see me, not the illness”.

The exhibition exposes talents of artists with experience of mental illness and highlights the fact that they can and do recover, to lead fulfilling lives contributing to society.

The free art show runs until Saturday at Poplar’s ‘Somewhere to’ space at 11 Market Way, Chrisp Street, off East India Dock Road, near All Saints DLR.
