AN inspirational book and film will be the topic of discussion at the Museum of London Docklands tomorrow (Saturday).
To Sir, With Love was written by E R Braithwaite about his experiences as a young black teacher in the post war East End and was made into a hugely successful film starring Sidney Poitier.
A discussion at the West India Quay museum explores whether the book and the film told the real story and asks how well they captured Braithwaite's radical innovations and how accurately the school was portrayed in the novel.
The informal study day will explore some of the complex and intriguing issues raised by Braithwaite's book, including progressive state education in post war Britain, the black post war presence in London and at the film itself and its depiction of life in the East End.
Speakers will include actor, writer and broadcaster Burt Caesar, Fielding, professor of education at the Institute of Education Michael, East End historian and ex pupil at St George-in-the-East Alfred Gardner, teacher Michael Newman and film historian and author Jim Pines.
To Sir, With Love and the East End is on at Museum of London Docklands from 10.30am-5pm tomorrow.
