A group of historic paintings are returning to east London for the first time since their creation in the 1920s and 1930s.
The Working Artist: The East London Group, curated by writer Michael Rosen and film-maker Emma-Louise Williams, will depict the artworks of a movement of ordinary men and women who attended art classes and exhibited paintings alongside their day jobs.
The individuals were known as The East London Group and their images immortalise the history of areas such as Cambridge Heath and Bow through their depictions of local streets and buildings.
Works have been drawn from family collections and public institutions from across the country including the Manchester City Art Gallery.
Sophie Hill, Nunnery Gallery co-director, said: “The East London Group paintings are rich in both history and social narrative, revealing what has changed and what hasn’t about our local area.”
Exhibition runs from September 29 to December 17 at the Nunnery Gallery, Bow.
