It is 25 years since a young Brooklyn-born comedian created a story about an African prince flying to the USA to find his bride.

Eddy Murphy’s film ‘Coming to America’ was a critical and commercial smash that’s still revered a-quarter-of-a-century later.

It is now celebrating the 25th anniversary of its original 1988 release with events company ‘We Are Parable’ joining hands with Picturehouse Stratford for a special ‘one night only’ screening.

“We absolutely loved this film when we were growing up,” explained Teanne Andrews, one half of the husband-and-wife duo who set up ‘We Are Parable’.

“A whole generation resonated with Murphy’s characters. Even 25 years later, a whole new group of people are still discovering how groundbreaking and funny it is.”

The Stratford event includes African dancers and drummers to bring a taste of Murphy’s mythical principality, Zamunda, to east London on June 20.

Teanne’s partner and co-founder Anthony Andrews recalled: “My first experience of this film was a badly-dubbed version on late-night TV.

“But the world that Murphy created was so memorable.

“Even peripheral characters could have had their own separate films—that’s how complete his universe is.

“We were part of the generation who were too young to see ‘Coming to America’ in the cinema.

“So what better time to bring it back to the Big Screen than its 25th birthday?”

Both grew up in east London, Teanne in Plaistow, Andrew in Leyton. They are laying on themed cocktails and a quiz to test even the most ardent Soul Glo fan and make this event they assure will be “too good to miss”.

‘Coming To America’ is at Picturehouse Stratford in Salway Road, Stratford, on Thursday, June 20, at 7pm. Tickets online: http://www.picturehouses.co.uk/cinema/Stratford_London/film/Coming_To_America/
