World-class ballet is coming live to Victoria Park in London’s East End followed by opera live at Canary Wharf—relayed from Covent Garden onto the Big Screen.

The Royal Ballet’s Mayerling being relayed to Vicky Park next Thursday evening marks the first of a new five-year deal with commercial sponsors for a series of free performances from the Royal Opera House broadcast to 22 locations around the country.

Mayerling is a drama of 19th century political intrigue and romance in the old Austro-Hungarian empire, set to music by Liszt. Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s production starring Edward Watson, Mara Galeazzi and Sarah Lamb is introduced by TV’s Alan Titchmarsh and includes backstage film clips, competitions and live interaction.

The screening that kicks off the sponsorship deal with BP starts at 7.30pm at Victoria Park and 13 other locations including Trafalgar Square, Walthamstow Town Square and General Gordon Square in Woolwich.

Two Puccini operas are relayed live next month to Canary Wharf’s Canada Square as well as Walthamstow and Woolwich—La Rondine (The Swallow) on July 11, originally commissioned in Vienna in 1913 before the outbreak of the First World War, followed a week later on July 18 by Tosca, a melodramatic work set in 1800 with Naples’ threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy, with torture, murder and suicide included.
