A NEW play at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green this week celebrates the courage and strength of the first African American women to succeed as self-made entrepreneurs.

Inspired by the life of Madam CJ Walker who made millions selling hair products for black women, 1867 is set during a time of slavery, oppression and inequality amongst men and women as well as race.

It follows the story of fictional character Delilah McAndrew as she builds one of the largest black owned manufacturing companies in the world as well as a reputation for kindness and philanthropic work.

Bollywood actress, Saima Duhare directs 1867 with the company she founded, Palladini Productions.

Playwright, Theresa Roche, said: "Rich Mix, a hub of multi-cultural art, is the perfect venue for 1867 which itself is the result of an artistic collaboration between an Asian production company, a white playwright and a predominantly black cast".

1867 - Me Wants the Moon is running at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green Road from tonight (Thursday) until Saturday.

The play starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost 10 or 8 for concessions, available from www.richmix.org.uk or 020 7613 7498.
