THE East End's curry tradition has been given added sparkle at a new restaurant which opened in Docklands last month.

The Dockmaster's House in Hertsmere Road is an Indian restaurant and bar, located within a three-storey, listed Georgian building which aims to serve traditional Sub-Continental food with a Western twist to Canary Wharf bankers fond of fine dining.

Aiming to serve classical Indian dishes which retain their identity but are given a contemporary twist, Dockmaster's House's menu mirrors the historic old building that has been given a modern day makeover.

The dining room is set off of the ground floor lobby, next to a bar for diners wishing to enjoy pre-dinner drinks or relax over digestifs while 'the cube', a modern contemporary space for private diners, overlooks the main restaurant.

Executive chef at Dockmaster's House is Navin Bhatia, who has trained some of London's top Indian chefs and was most recently group head chef at Soho's Caf Lazeez.

Navin is regarded as one of the leading new wave Indian chefs in the UK and has planned a menu featuring ancient, traditional Indian recipes using modern British ingredients to create a lighter, more contemporary menu.

The Dockmaster's House was built 200 years ago by the East India Trading Company and was once the excise office for West India Quay.

But in the 19th and early 20th century the building fell into disrepute as the Jamaica Tavern which was a notorious opium den, shut down in a police crackdown on the drug in 1925.

The next year it was converted into the dock superintendent's offices and remained an administrative building for the docks until 1980.

The restaurant does fixed lunch and dinner menus for 17.95 for two courses and 20.95 for three courses.

It is open from noon-3pm and 6-11pm Monday to Friday and from 6-11.30pm on Saturdays.
