DISAPPOINTED that East End cups of coffee fell short of their exacting standards, the brains behind new Bethnal Green Caf decided to launch their own venture.

Taste of Bitter Love has just opened on Hackney Road and the owners claim they serve some of the best coffee in east London.

The caf opened to "provide a much needed combination of brilliant coffee, great food, friendly service and a good vibe".

Taste of Bitter Love's beans come from Bethnal Green grinders Square Mile Coffee, based on Poyser Street, which are then transformed by baristas into what they call the "perfect cup" using the correct technique for espresso extraction and texturing milk correctly.

Packets of Square Mile Coffee are also for sale in the caf so customers can make their own French press or drip filter at home.

Cakes and pastries, including croissants, pain au chocolat and apricot and mascarpone tart as well as farmhouse cheddar and onion jam, smoked salmon and cream cheese, asparagus and roquefort, salami and brie and brie and roasted vegetable sandwiches are also on offer.

Taste of Bitter Love is at 276 Hackney Road. It is closed on Saturdays but is open from 7.30am-4pm Monday-Friday and from 10am-3pm on Sundays.
