JAPANESE play The Love Suicides at Sonezaki will be staged at Graces Alley theatre next week
A famous Japanese tale of love-struck suicides, told through puppetry and manga animation, comes to Wilton’s Music Hall next week.
The Graces Alley venue, near Tower Gateway DLR station and the oldest grand music hall in the world, presents The Love Suicides at Sonezaki, a piece of 17th century puppet theatre by one of Japan’s greatest dramatists, Chikamatsu Monzaemon, from October 4 to 6.
The short play, in three scenes and staged over a day and a night, was inspired by real-life suicides which Monzaemon discovered in a newspaper in 1703 and the love story focuses on two characters, a young orphan merchant clerk named Tokubei and a courtesan, Ohatsu.
The puppet show will also use anime-inspired videos and live music, with sushi and saki available in the bar beforehand.
